YOUR OSTEOPATHIC CONSULTATION
Whilst every Osteopathic consultation is uniquely tailored to the individual patient, each will follow a similar format. The details of this format are shown below.
CASE HISTORY
Many people make their Osteopath the first port of call when suffering from pain and dysfunction. As the result of this, it is important for your Osteopath to gain as much information about your presenting complaint as they feel is necessary to formulate an accurate diagnosis. In many cases, your past medical history, medication history and general health issues may also be discussed during this detailed process.
EXAMINATION
In order to confirm a potential diagnosis, it is important to carry out a thorough examination procedure. Due to Osteopathy's unique perspective, this examination may include areas of the body that initially appear quite remote from the symptomatic region, for instance the ankle and the low back. Osteopaths are trained to use a wide variety of both orthodox and osteopathic examination techniques to aid their diagnosis.
TREATMENT
Osteopathic treatment will incorporate a wide variety of techniques. These may inlcude soft tissue massage-type techniques, stretching technqiues, joint articulatory techniques, cranio-sacral teachniques and manipulative techniques to name but a few. Osteopaths are renowned for their skilled ability to manipulate joints. It is these manipulations that often produce a 'click' as they are carried out. Whilst perfectly safe and effective techniques, some people are often apprehensive about the use of these techniques, if this is the case speak to your Osteopath about your reservations before treatment begins. In most cases, other techniques can be used instead.
AFTER TREATMENT CARE
What happens after your consultation can be just as important as the treatment you have recieved. Your Osteopath will advise if there are any activities that should be avoided during the course of your treatment.
In many cases, your Osteopath will also advise you on home treatment, self help and exercises to aid your speedy recovery. They will also advise you on preventative measures in order to minimalise the risk of recurrence.
In some cases, after treatment care may include communication with your General Practitioner or other healthcare providers
WHAT IS CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY?
Cranial osteopathy is a refined and subtle form of ostetopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body including the head.
Our cranial osteopaths are trained to feel very subtle rhythmical shape change that is present in all the body's tissues.
The skull is made up of 26 bones which are all linked together like a jigsaw puzzle. The rhythmical cycle of movement is used to improve the function of these bones and the tissues in the body to encourage the body's inherent healing mechanism.
WHAT CAN BE TREATED WITH CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY?
At the Cedars Osteopathic Practice we have osteopaths who are specifically trained in the field of carnical osteopathy to treat a wide range of problems in babies, children and adults. It is never to late (or too early) to benefit from osteopathy. Common probelems our osteopaths treat include:
Sinus congestion/Sinusitis
Colic/Trapped Wind/Constipation
Sleep Pattern Disturbance
Headaches
Irritable/Overactive Children and Persistent Crying
Ear Infections/Blockage Etc.
and much more..........
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL YOU NEED?
On average, 2 to 6 treatments is usually sufficient to correct most problems that are amenable to osteopathic treatment. However, this will vary from patient to patient and after the initial assessment and treatment your osteopath will be able to give you a more accurate prognosis.
