What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine which originated in China around 2,500 years ago.
Simply stated, Acupuncture is the practice of gently needling specific points on the body in order to influence how the body operates. Each of the 365 main Acupuncture points has a unique capacity to influence the activities of the visceral organs, the muscles, the tendons and the ligaments as well as various areas of emotional and psychological functioning.
An Acupuncturist employs the use of these points and the wide body of knowledge accumulated by Chinese physicians over thousands of years to treat and prevent disease. The overall view of treatment is to strengthen the constitution of the patient so they become healthier, happier, and more able to function effectively in all areas of their life.
After the initial consultation, which usually lasts 1 ½ - 2 hours, an Acupuncturist will begin to treat according to the diagnosis he or she has made. Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into various areas of the body which harmonize the function of the internal organs. Many patients find treatment to be deeply relaxing and will often leave feeling calm, peaceful, and in many cases more energised. Sterile, single use, disposable needles are used which ensures the highest levels of hygiene and safety. After the initial consultation, patients will often attend for a series of follow up treatments the number and frequency of which will depend upon the patient and their condition.
