What we Do and How we Do It

Using portable equipment we clean mattresses, carpets, curtains, fluffy toys and all other soft fabrics and upholsterd furniture to provide an ultra-clean environment. The unique three-stage process doesn't use liquids or toxic chemicals.

The Problem

Within the indoor environment of our homes we lock in dust and pollutants with ever increasing efficiency. Our windows are double-glazed; door frames and letter-boxes are sealed. Our houses are insulated to ever-higher standards for comfort, to prevent those annoying draughts in cold weather and to save money on expensive energy bills. Our floorboards once covered by lino or the occasional rug are now usually hidden by fitted carpets, particularly in bedrooms. These microscopic insects are present wherever there is fabric and a source of food which we humans unwittingly provide. They are present in every home, particularly in mattresses where they can live by the million, literally. They do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, class or standards of personal hygiene; they are part of the human condition.

The animals themselves are not a particular problem, it’s their droppings and the enzymes present in the resultant dust that are a serious health hazard. A Brief History of Modern Housekeeping

In the last 50 years there have been important changes in the way that we housekeep which has resulted in higher levels of dust in the home.

Firstly we don’t clean mattresses these days. Up until the 1960’s mattresses were taken outside and given a good beating on a regular basis to remove mites and their dust. We don’t do this now, partly because we’ve forgotten about the need but mostly because it’s no longer practical. Mattresses that were a couple of inches thick and easily portable have been replaced by larger and much deeper heavyweights that can sometimes barely be turned.

Secondly the most important tool of the trade, the vacuum cleaner, has changed. The popular models of the 1960’s included a beating action alongside suction power. The manufacturers perceived that people were concerned with surface appearance and appliance cost, so the beating action was largely discontinued. The amount of dust, grit and hair held within a clean-looking carpet can be truly astonishing.

The Solution

The Mattress Doctor three-stage process decontaminates, sterilises and protects.

The decontamination stage removes more than 99.9% of all foreign material that may include mould and fungus spores along with dead skin, dust, live and dead dust mites and other unmentionables. The industrial strength vacuum has an air filtration system pioneered for use in asbestos removal and ensures that allergens are not pumped back into the air. The vacuum is integrated with a unit having a beating action that sets up a high frequency vibration within the mattress or other surface being cleaned. The combination of vibration and vacuum power gives highly efficient decontamination.

Sterilisation is achieved with UVC radiation that destroys all micro-biotic life.

Finally protection is applied in the form of a quick drying spray that is organic and certified safe for adults, children and pets.
