More information about our services

Acupuncture can help a wide range of conditions, both acute and chronic. Examples of conditions which are commonly treated include: back pain, painful joints, frozen shoulder, arthritis, sciatica, headaches, migraine, anxiety, depression, stress, digestive disorders, insomnia, asthma, hay fever, sinusitis, menstrual problems, PMS, menopausal symptoms, infertility, and chronic fatigue.

Acupuncture is a holistic system of medicine encompassing the whole person. It recognises and utilises the enormous potential of the human body to adjust, repair and rebalance itself. It offers individualised treatment based on analysing information obtained through listening, interviewing, observation, palpation and pulse taking.

Acupuncture originates in China, but is now used all over the world as knowledge of its benefits increases. Central to Traditional Chinese Medicine is the concept of Qi, the life force or vital energy which flows throughout the body. In a healthy person the Qi flows smoothly around the body. However, if this flow is disrupted for some reason, illness can occur.

Acupuncture can balance the flow of Qi and stimulate the body’s own healing by inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body

What happens...

At your first consultation time is spent doing an extensive intake and a complete medical history. You will be asked many detailed questions about your condition and lifestyle. Chinese medicine is holistic and we require information beyond just your immediate complaint.

Your pulses will be palpated and we will look at your tongue. The abdomen will be also be palpated. These are three areas which provide much diagnostic information. Where there is pain, other areas of the body may also be palpated.

Treatment involves the insertion of fine acupuncture needles. You may feel a light pinprick on insertion and some sensation of dullness or heaviness. Needles are left in place for about 20 minutes while you relax. Treatment may also include massage, moxibustion and cupping. Moxibustion is where moxa (a dried herb, usually mugwort) is burned either directly on the skin or indirectly above the skin over specific acupuncture points. Cupping is where a glass cup is placed over the skin and a vacuum created to draw up the skin.

The first consultation will last between an hour and an hour and a half and subsequent sessions up to an hour.
